The Plaza has date with wrecking ball

Evergreen Park Mayor Jim Sexton knows where he’ll be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. And he knows that a lot of longtime Southland residents may join him, camera phones in hand, to record the start of a historic event. That’s when the first wrecking ball is scheduled to slam into The Plaza, the 63-year-old mall at 95th Street and Western Avenue. The Plaza is being demolished to make room for a smaller shopping center — Evergreen Marketplace will be an outdoor mall of 30 to 40 stores facing Western Avenue. Sexton refrained Thursday from naming potential retailers but mentioned previously that Dick’s Sporting Goods and Whole Foods were interested in the new mall.

H&M to open Oct. 22 at Macomb Mall

Good news for fashion forward shoppers in southern Macomb County! H&M — the fast fashion retailer that’s on an expansion jag — has announced it will open its new 20,000-square-foot H&M store at Macomb Mall in Roseville on Oct. 22. The store’s opening is significant because it gives shoppers in southern Macomb County — who have long complained about a shortage of retail stores — a new fashion option. In addition, its location at Macomb Mall — which has been undergoing a renovation in an attempt to keep it from joining the list of aging local malls that are tottering on the verge of extinction or have already closed — represents a vote of confidence in the shopping center…

Days are Numbered at the Plaza

A Chain-link fence stands around the perimeter of The Plaza, a nearly vacant indoor mall in Evergreen Park, as crews relocate utility lines and dig into the parking lot for a standalone Carson’s store that will be an anchor of a new mall. Anyone who has wondered about the future of the aging retail center at 95th Street and Western Avenue finally has some concrete answers — The Plaza is scheduled to be torn down, making it another Southwest Side memory like Marzano’s Miami Bowl. It will be replaced by Evergreen Park Marketplace, an outdoor mall of 30 to 40 stores facing Western Avenue…

From the Archives: Frandor

Frandor Shopping Center was the state’s second regional shopping center, built before the era of slick, suburban shopping malls. Built on what was formerly the nine-hole Glenmoor Golf Course, it held its dedication in August 1954, starting out as a haven of specialty shops. When the 1970s rolled around, the trend was toward enclosed malls, a shopping experience rather than a convenience. So, Frandor enclosed the east wing of the mall, which Corr says everyone grew quite fond of. It lasted until 1998. Eventually, consumer behaviors changed again. Customers wanted to get in and out of stores in a hurry. So, the partners again reinvented Frandor, brought in a large contingent of national retailers and removed the enclosure….
